What you need

  1. Four dynamic microphones on four arms.

    Cardioid, close, and low-profile arms so nothing crosses the camera frame. Four open microphones in one room means four times the room noise, so proximity is the control.

  2. A production console.

    The RØDECaster Pro II or a comparable console gives four preamps with enough gain, four independent headphone outputs with individual level control, multitrack recording to its own media, sound pads and phone-caller integration — without a computer in the recording chain.

  3. Four sets of closed-back headphones or IEMs.

    IEMs stay out of frame on video, which is why filmed podcasts use them.

  4. Video, if it is filmed.

    The RØDECaster Video and Video S fold HDMI switching into the same console, which removes a separate switcher. Otherwise take the cameras into an ATEM Mini Pro ISO and record every angle separately.

  5. Cables and a plan for where they run.

    Four mics, four headphones and camera feeds is a real cable count.

Why a console instead of an interface at four people?

Four independent headphone feeds with individual levels, enough clean gain on four channels, multitrack recording without a computer, and a surface someone can ride live.

Do four open microphones cause problems?

They pick up four times the room. Keep speakers close to their microphones, use cardioid patterns, and mute unused channels or use a console with automixing.

How do I add video to a four-person podcast?

Either a console with HDMI switching built in, or send the cameras to an ATEM Mini Pro ISO, which records each angle separately so the show can be re-cut.

Should guests wear headphones or IEMs?

IEMs on camera, because they stay out of frame and isolate better. Over-ear headphones are more comfortable for long audio-only sessions.
