How to choose a camera cage

Fit the exact body. Cages are machined to a specific camera. A cage for one generation will not clear the ports, battery door or screen hinge of the next. Filter by model, always.

Full cage or half cage. A half cage adds a top plate and a few threads and keeps the camera light. A full cage surrounds the body, protects it and gives mounting on all four sides. Add weight only where you need points.

Port access. Check that the cage leaves the battery door, card slot and flip-out screen usable. HDMI cable clamps matter more than they sound: a cage that clamps the cable protects the camera's port from a yank.

Mounting standard. ARRI 3/8"-16 locating pins stop accessories rotating; NATO rails let handles slide on and off in seconds; Arca-Swiss and Falcam F38/F22 plates move the whole rig between tripod and gimbal. Pick one and stay on it.

Build up, not out. Top handles, side handles, shoulder rigs, rod systems and monitor brackets all live here.

SmallRig makes most of them, with Ulanzi's Falcam system, Hollyland, Atomos and Aputure filling the rest. Almost everything here shows a price and goes straight to the cart.

Questions we get asked

Do I need a camera cage?

Once you attach more than one accessory. A cage gives you mounting points on every face plus protection, which a single tripod thread cannot.

Will a cage from one camera fit a similar model?

Rarely. Port positions, battery doors and screen hinges move between generations, so cages are cut per model. Order the cage named for your exact body.

Half cage or full cage?

A half cage keeps weight down and adds a top plate with threads. A full cage surrounds the body for protection and gives mounting on all sides at the cost of weight.

What is a NATO rail for?

It lets handles and accessories slide on and clamp in seconds without tools, and it stops them rotating. It is the fastest way to reconfigure a rig on set.

Why does an HDMI cable clamp matter?

The camera's HDMI port is fragile and expensive to repair. A clamp on the cage takes any pull on the cable instead of the port.
