How to choose an audio mixer

Channel count and type. Count microphone inputs separately from line inputs; a four-channel automixer and a four-channel line mixer solve different problems. Shure's SCM262 and SCM268 handle small rooms, the SCM810 scales to eight.

Automixing. An automixer opens the channel that is being spoken into and closes the rest. For boardrooms, panels and houses of worship this removes the live operator; for a scripted podcast it is unnecessary.

Desktop or rack. Podcast and streaming consoles live on the desk with the mics. Installed mixers live in a rack, are set once and are not touched again.

What it feeds. Hollyland's MELO P1 is a desktop podcast console with its own outputs; Blackmagic's Fairlight Desktop Console and Console Channel Fader are control surfaces for DaVinci Resolve, not standalone mixers — they need a workstation behind them.

Questions we get asked

What does an automixer do that a normal mixer does not?

It opens the channel of whoever is speaking and attenuates the others automatically, which cuts room noise and feedback in multi-microphone rooms without an operator.

Is a Fairlight console a standalone mixer?

No. Fairlight desktop and console surfaces are control hardware for DaVinci Resolve. Audio is processed on the workstation, so the computer is part of the system.

Do I need a mixer for a two-person podcast?

Not necessarily. A two-input audio interface records two separate tracks and gives more editing control. A console makes sense when you add live callers, music beds or a stream feed.

Rack mixer or desktop console?

Rack mixers are set up once and left alone, which suits installed rooms. Desktop consoles are for operators who adjust levels during the recording or stream.

Can these mixers record multitrack?

Podcast and streaming consoles typically record each channel separately over USB. Installed analogue mixers output a mix and need a separate recorder.
