Build it yourself: what you need

  1. A microphone chosen for the room, not for the reviews.

RØDE PodMic and Shure SM7B for untreated rooms and heavy narration days; RØDE NT1 Signature, NT1 5th Generation and NT2000 when the room is quiet and the brief wants air. Simpex SDM-002 and Digitek DM-701 are the affordable USB/XLR dynamics. For ASMR, the NT1's very low self-noise is the figure to pay for.

  2. An interface with enough gain and a clean headphone output.

RØDE AI-1 or Elgato Wave XLR MK.1 for a single XLR mic straight to USB. Zoom PodTrak P4next and P8, RØDECaster Duo and Pro II when more than one voice is in the session. Check the gain figure against the mic before anything else — that is the difference between a usable take and a hiss you spend the evening cleaning.

  3. Closed-back headphones you can trust at 2 a.m.

Sony MDR-7506 and MDR-M1, RØDE NTH-50 and NTH-100. Closed-back so nothing bleeds back into the mic on a punch-in, and flat enough that you hear the sibilance and the room tail while you are still in the chair.

  4. A boom arm that holds position for a long session.

SmallRig 4303, RØDE PSA1 and PSA1+, Elgato Wave Mic Arm LP. A heavy dynamic on a light arm sags over three hours, and an arm that creaks is on every take.

  5. Shock mount, pop filter, windscreen.

RØDE's SM6 shock mount comes with the NT1 microphones and its WS2 foam fits the PodMic and NT2000. Plosives and desk thumps are the two things that cannot be fixed later, and both are solved for the price of a cable.

  6. Treatment where the reflections actually are.

Elgato Wave Panels are desk-scale — good behind a mic, not a room solution. Beyond that: heavy curtains on the reflective wall, a rug, a bookshelf, and recording into the room's soft side rather than into a bare wall. For full acoustic panels and bass traps, the Pro Desk can quote a treated room with a local partner.

Questions we get asked

Dynamic or condenser for voice-over?

Dynamic in an untreated room: a RØDE PodMic or Shure SM7B hears mostly you and very little of the wall behind you. Condenser when the room is treated and the brief wants detail: RØDE NT1 Signature or NT2000. ASMR is condenser territory by definition.

Why does my SM7B sound quiet and hissy?

It needs about 60 dB of clean gain and most entry interfaces run out before that. Either take a hotter dynamic such as the Elgato Wave DX, or put an interface with more gain behind the SM7B: an Elgato Wave XLR or a Zoom PodTrak.

How much treatment does a small room need?

Less than people sell you and in specific places. First reflection points on the two side walls and the wall you face, something soft behind the mic, and a rug. A bare cupboard full of clothes is a better vocal booth than a wall of thin foam.

Do you sell acoustic panels and bass traps?

Barely — Elgato Wave Panels are desk-scale treatment, good behind a mic. Full room treatment is a separate job; the Pro Desk can quote a treated room with a local partner.

What sample rate and format do dubbing studios ask for?

Usually 48 kHz 24-bit WAV, mono, at a consistent level, with room tone at the head. Every interface here does 48 kHz and above — the part you control is keeping the mic distance and the gain identical between sessions so retakes cut in.

Can I record more than one voice at a time?

Two mics need two preamps: a Zoom PodTrak P4next or a RØDECaster Pro II. Both also have several headphone outputs, so a director can listen live with no separate headphone amp.
