How to choose a stand or clamp

Load rating against real weight. Rate for the fixture plus its modifier plus cable drag, then add margin. A heavy COB in a large softbox is a sail, and a sandbag on the leg is not optional.

Height and footprint. Ulanzi's AT-05 2 m heavy-duty foldable stand and T270 2.7 m stand cover normal ceilings. Check folded length if the stand travels.

Spigot and thread. 5/8" baby pin is the standard on stands; 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 are the camera-accessory threads. Aputure's Baby Pin to 3/8" adapter and Super Clamp bridge the two worlds.

Clamps and arms. A super clamp grips scaffold, pipe and table edges; a magic arm positions a monitor, light or mic in three dimensions. SmallRig's crab-shaped clamps with ball-head magic arms are the volume seller here, in 7" and 11" lengths.

Speciality mounting. Truss clamps, dual yokes for large panels (Aputure's Nova P600c Dual Head Yoke) and four-light brackets carry weight the standard stand cannot.

Questions we get asked

What is a C-stand and why use one instead of a light stand?

A C-stand has a heavy turtle base, a gripping head and an arm, so it can position a light off to the side and over obstacles. A light stand puts the fixture straight above its own legs.

Which way should a C-stand leg point?

The tallest leg goes under the arm, so the load sits over a leg rather than between two. That single habit prevents most stand tip-overs.

How much load can a magic arm take?

Enough for monitors, small lights and microphones. Check the stated load; a heavy fixture on a long arm multiplies the leverage and should go on a stand or a yoke.

What is the difference between 5/8\" and 1/4\"-20?

5/8\" baby pin is the light-stand mounting standard. 1/4\"-20 is the camera-accessory thread. Adapters exist in both directions and are worth keeping in the bag.

Do I need sandbags?

For any stand carrying a modifier, outdoors, or anywhere people walk. A softbox catches air, and the fixture on top is usually the most expensive item in the room.
