Build it yourself: what you need

  1. A camera, in the kit or your own.

The kits use a Canon R50, Sony FX30 or FX3A. Sony FX6 and Blackmagic Pocket 4K/6K and PYXIS 6K also suit this job. Look for XLR or 3.5 mm in, clean HDMI, and a cage cut for that chassis.

  2. Two microphones, not one.

On-camera shotgun (RØDE VideoMic into a 3.5 mm input, or NTG1 into an XLR handle) for walk-and-talk. Clip-on wireless (Godox Virso M1 or Hollyland Lark Max 2) for the interview. Both wireless sets can record a backup in the transmitter, so a dropout does not lose the take.

  3. A cage that fits.

SmallRig 4184b is cut for FX3/FX30 and clears the XLR handle. A universal cage that rotates is worse than none. Add a V-mount plate with the battery.

  4. A monitor.

Lilliput HT5S, 5.5 in, 2000 nit: daylight exposure without guessing. A Blackmagic Video Assist, which records too, only if the internal codec is not enough or an SDI camera turns up.

  5. Power and media.

VB99 mini (98.872 Wh, USB-C, D-tap) is carry-on legal. Two-bay charger at pro. Cards are in every kit: SD for the R50 and FX30, CFexpress Type A plus SD at pro.

  6. A modest tripod.

CT-20 at starter; carbon later. Handheld most of the day; sticks for the interview.

Questions we get asked

Do you sell the Sony FX3?

The FX30 and FX3A are in these kits at a shown price. Other Sony bodies, such as the FX6, get price and lead time on a quote. Or bring your own body; the cage, monitor and audio around it show prices.

Why two microphones?

The shotgun covers walk-and-talk and ambience. The clip-on covers the sit-down interview you did not plan. One mic cannot do both well.

What camera spec should I bring?

A body with a 3.5 mm or XLR mic input, clean HDMI for a monitor, and media you can buy (SD or CFexpress). Full-frame or Super 35 cinema/mirrorless is the usual class — FX3/FX30, Pocket 6K, PYXIS.

Is the VB99 airline-legal?

98.872 Wh is under the 100 Wh carry-on threshold. Two of them is the standard allowance. Packs above 100 Wh need airline approval.
