Build it yourself: what you need

  1. An auto-tracking PTZ.

    OBSBOT Tail 2 follows the lecturer between board and lectern. No operator is the product. Its 5x optical lens works within about 15 m of the board, and presets come from the OBSBOT Start app.

  2. Streaming in hardware.

    ATEM Mini Pro ISO streams and records with no computer in the path. Capture that needs a logged-in room PC is the system that gets abandoned. Bring your own LMS.

  3. Presenter wireless.

    RØDE clip-on mics on 2.4 GHz, with the receiver in clear sight of the lecturer. An MX153 earset, for a teacher who turns to the board, is a swap on a quote. Ceiling mics are a quoted layer, because intelligibility is a distance problem.

  4. Slides.

    The same ATEM takes the room PC's HDMI and cuts it against the camera, so the stream is one program.

  5. Overhead, if you need the desk.

    SmallRig desk-overhead brackets for documents. They do not replace the PTZ on the lecturer.

  6. Auditorium scale.

    Two tracking PTZs on SDI, Television Studio HD8 ISO, HyperDeck, rack UHF handhelds for the floor. The cable pull and mounting are your installer's job. The rack handhelds and the MXA902 array go on a quote, so this kit is a quote rather than a cart.

Questions we get asked

Why not just use a webcam and Zoom?

A webcam on a lectern does not follow a teacher to the board, and a room PC that nobody logs into does not record. Auto-tracking plus a switcher that streams and records in hardware starts even when nobody logs in.

How do slides get into the stream?

An ATEM Mini Pro ISO takes the room PC's HDMI next to the camera and streams one composed program. On the SDI pro kit, an HDMI to SDI converter brings the PC in.

Lavalier or earset?

A clip-on is in every kit. An MX153 earset keeps a constant mouth distance while the lecturer turns to the board, which a chest lav cannot; it is a swap with price and lead time on a quote.

What about questions from the floor?

No lapel can cover them. The better and pro kits include handhelds passed along the rows. The MXA902 ceiling array plus ANIUSB-MATRIX covers the room with no handheld, with USB for the conferencing platform and analogue for the PA; it goes on a quote after a site survey.
