Build it yourself: what you need

  1. A key light and a softbox.

One shaped COB off-axis in a 60–90 cm softbox at 45° does more for a talking-head than a camera upgrade. A 32 in reflector on the fill side separates you from the wall.

  2. A microphone out of frame.

A shotgun just above the frame line, or a dynamic on a low-profile arm. Either beats the camera mic. A shotgun on a boom, cabled down to the camera's mic input, beats one on the hot shoe.

  3. A stable camera position.

Tripod, fluid head, eye level. Chest height on a shelf is the usual mistake.

  4. Power and a monitor.

Mains or an internal-battery COB for an hour, plus a monitor or flip screen so you can see framing.

  5. Bring your own camera.

Look for clean HDMI, a 3.5 mm or XLR input, and a 35–50 mm equivalent for a seated head-and-shoulders frame. The light and mic above work with the body or phone you already have.

Questions we get asked

Do I need a camera to start?

No. Everything in this setup works with a phone or the camera you own. If you want a body quoted with the kit, send the model on WhatsApp.

What single upgrade improves a talking-head video most?

A shaped key light in a softbox off-axis. It changes the image more than a better camera or a better microphone will.

Where should the microphone go?

Just above the frame line pointed down at the mouth, or on a low-profile arm if it can be visible. Camera-mounted microphones sound as far away as the camera is.

How high should the camera be?

At the subject's eye level. A tripod with a fluid head makes that repeatable; a shelf or a stack of books does not.
