Why this kit

Going from one light to two is what separates a video that looks lit from one that looks bright: the RC 220B through an 85 cm parabolic gives you a key you can actually place at 1.5 m, and the RC 60B Lite behind the subject stops the head merging into the wall. Both lights are the same SmallRig RC family and both run 2700–6500 K, so they sit together without gelling. The VideoMic NTG moves the microphone from the hot shoe to a boom overhead, which is the single biggest dialogue upgrade available: it halves the mic-to-mouth distance and points the null at the ceiling. The C-stand with boom is specified rather than a light stand because a boomed mic needs an arm that stays where you put it. The camera is a full-frame Canon R8 on USB-C power (Canon lists USB power for the R8) that records up to 2 hr per clip. It has no XLR input, so this mic has a 3.5 mm output instead: the VC1 extension runs it 3 m down the boom into the camera's mic input, with nothing else to power. If you want a separate safety recording, the Wireless PRO add-on keeps a 32-bit float copy on the clip-on transmitter.
