How to choose a camera filter

Thread size and step-up rings. Buy filters at your largest lens diameter and use step-up rings for the rest. SmallRig's Adapter Rings Kit (52/55/58/62–95 mm) exists for this; two filter sets for two lenses is the expensive mistake.

ND stop range. Variable ND kits are sold by range: ND2–ND32 is one to five stops, ND64–ND400 is six to nine. A single VND that claims to cover both usually cross-polarises at the extremes and prints an X across the frame. Two filters, two ranges.

Diffusion strength. Black mist comes in 1/8, 1/4, 1/2 and 1. Start at 1/4 for skin and highlight bloom; 1 is a strong, obvious look.

Round or cine. Magnetic 67 mm systems clip on and off in seconds for run-and-gun. 4x5.65" trays — SmallRig's Black Diffusion 1/4 and White Diffusion — are for matte boxes and stack without vignetting on wide glass.

Combination filters (VND plus CPL, VND plus black mist) save a slot in the stack, which matters on a wide lens.
