How to choose a phone rig

Cage: universal or model-specific. A universal cage clamps any handset and survives your next phone. A model-specific cage (SmallRig's Pro Mobile Cages for individual iPhone generations) fits precisely, keeps ports clear and adds a threaded lens backplate for mobile optics. Universal for longevity, specific for optics.

Mounting points. Count what has to attach: a wireless mic receiver, a pocket light, a monitor, a handle. Cold shoes and 1/4"-20 threads are what you are buying.

Magnetic versus mechanical. MagSafe and MagLock mounts (Ulanzi's MA88, SK-22 electric suction, MA35 shutter) are fast for handheld and desk work. For a moving vehicle or anything overhead, use a mechanical clamp.

Filter adapters. SmallRig's Universal 67 mm threaded filter adapter and the FilMov series let a phone take the same ND and diffusion filters as a camera, which is the single biggest jump in phone video quality.

Stabilisation. Phone gimbal bodies are not stocked yet, but the quick-release plates and holders that connect a phone to one are — see gimbals.

Do I need a phone cage?

If you want to attach a microphone, a light or a filter, yes. A phone has no mounting points, and a cage gives you cold shoes and 1/4\"-20 threads.

Universal or model-specific phone cage?

A universal cage survives your next handset. A model-specific cage fits precisely, keeps ports and buttons clear, and supports threaded lens backplates for mobile optics.

Can I use real camera filters on a phone?

Yes, with a 67 mm threaded adapter on a cage. Variable ND is the biggest single improvement, because it lets you hold a natural shutter speed outdoors.

Are MagSafe mounts strong enough?

For handheld, desk and static use, yes. For vehicles, overhead rigs and anything with vibration, use a mechanical clamp instead.

Do you sell phone gimbals?

Not the gimbal bodies yet. Quick-release plates, holders and mounts that connect a phone to a stabiliser are stocked — send an enquiry if you need a body quoted.
