Podcast studio

Podcast microphones, boom arms, interfaces or consoles, and headphones for anyone recording a talk show, chosen by how many people speak.

Podcast studio — OneProGear

What you need

  1. One microphone per speaker.

Sharing loses level every time someone turns away and makes it impossible to edit one voice without touching the other. Dynamic mics — Shure SM7B, SM7dB, SM4 — suit untreated rooms.

  2. A boom arm per microphone.

This is the cheapest change that alters how a recording sounds: it removes desk and keyboard noise and puts the capsule at mouth height, out of frame.

  3. Capture.

One or two speakers need an interface or a hybrid USB/XLR mic such as the Shure MV7+ or MV7i. Three or more need a console — the RØDECaster Pro II or Duo — with faders, callers and multitrack recording on the desk.

  4. Headphones for everyone.

Closed-back only; open-back leaks into the microphone and prints on the take.

  5. Acoustic treatment.

Not stocked yet. Until it is, choose dynamic mics, work close, and put soft furnishings behind the speakers.

Build me a list

Tell us the room, the budget and how many people are on mic. We will send back a costed list for Podcast studio — usually the same working day.

Questions we get asked

How many microphones do I need for a podcast?

One per speaker, each recorded on its own track. That is what lets you edit, level and de-noise one voice without affecting the others.

Do I need an interface or a console?

An interface for one or two speakers recording into software. A console from three speakers up, or when you need live callers, sound pads or a stream feed.

Can I start with a USB microphone and upgrade later?

Yes, if you choose a hybrid USB/XLR model. The same microphone then moves onto an interface or a console without being replaced.

What is missing from this setup today?

Acoustic treatment — the collection is empty until a brand is sourced. Dynamic microphones and close mic technique cover most of the gap in an ordinary room.
