Build it yourself: what you need

  1. A clip-on wireless microphone.

    Phone video fails on audio first. A SmallRig S 60 (Lark Max 2 if you want onboard backup) puts the capsule at chest height, not arm's length. That is the outdoor difference.

  2. A phone cage or rig.

    Cold shoes for the receiver and a pocket light, 1/4 in threads, a grip that stops one-hand wobble. SmallRig's all-in-one kit is the starter; a dual-handheld cage is later. Match the cage to the phone.

  3. A pocket light.

    SmallRig Vibe P96 Pro or RM 25C in the cage shoe: the only light you will carry. A bigger COB stays home.

  4. A travel tripod or a compact gimbal.

    Lock-off for talking-head clips; a gimbal when you walk. Digitek selfie-stick tripods and SmallRig travel video tripods are in the kits. Bring your own smartphone.

    A 67 mm magnetic VND/CPL kit is a pro-tier add. Do not buy anamorphic glass until audio and hold are sorted.

Questions we get asked

Do I need a gimbal on day one?

No. A cage with a grip and a clip-on mic fixes audio and one-hand wobble first. Add a gimbal when you are walking and talking for more than a few minutes at a time.

Why a wireless mic instead of the phone mic?

The phone mic is at arm's length. A clip-on transmitter sits at chest height, which is the difference between usable dialogue and wind plus street noise.

Will this work with Android and iPhone?

Yes if the receiver matches your phone. The kits use USB-C receivers, which suit Android and iPhone 15 onwards. For an older iPhone, ask for the RØDE Wireless Micro in its Lightning version.

What about gimbals in India?

Gimbals suit walk-and-talk video. The DJI Osmo Mobile 7P and a Digitek 3-axis gimbal are add-ons on these kits, and the tripods and cages work with them; for any other gimbal body, send the model on WhatsApp and we quote it.
