How to choose a softbox or modifier

Mount first. Bowens is the common standard across this shelf — Aputure's Light Dome III and Light Dome Mini III, Ulanzi's QS80 and QS30, SmallRig's LA-O65 all speak it. A modifier that does not fit your fixture's mount is scrap.

Size relative to subject. Softness comes from apparent size. A 90 cm dome at one metre is soft; the same dome at four metres is not. Bigger boxes are softer and eat more light — usually one to two stops.

Shaping. A grid narrows a softbox's spread so it lights the subject without spraying the background. Flags and cutters (Aputure's flag sets) subtract light, which is often the faster fix.

Hard and directional. Fresnels (Aputure F10), spotlight and projection attachments with gobos put a controlled, throwable beam where a softbox cannot. Lanterns wrap light 360° for overhead ambience.

Reflectors. SmallRig's 5-in-1 collapsible reflectors in 22", 32" and 42" are the cheapest modifier on the page and often the only one a two-person shoot needs.

What makes light soft?

The apparent size of the source from the subject's position. A large modifier close to the subject is soft; the same modifier far away is effectively a point source and is hard.

Will any softbox fit my light?

Only if the mounts match. Bowens is the most common mount on this shelf; check your fixture's mount before ordering, and use a mount adapter if the brands differ.

What does a grid on a softbox do?

It narrows the spread so light falls on the subject and not on the background or the walls. It is the standard fix for a small room where everything lights up.

How much light does a softbox cost me?

Typically one to two stops depending on size and the number of diffusion layers. Factor that in when sizing the fixture behind it.

Do I need a reflector if I have two lights?

Often not, but a reflector is lighter, needs no power and no stand space. For a two-person interview it is frequently faster than rigging a second fixture.
