How to choose a video encoder

Protocol. Blackmagic's 2110 IP converters speak SMPTE 2110 — uncompressed video, audio and ancillary data as separate network flows, with PTP timing and NMOS IS-04/IS-05 discovery. That is a broadcast facility standard, not an internet-streaming one. If you want to reach YouTube, you want a switcher with built-in streaming or the ATEM Streaming Bridge, not this shelf.

Direction. Encoders send, decoders receive, bidirectional units do both. The 2110 IP Mini BiDirect 12G SFP handles both directions in one small box.

SDI rate. 3G for HD, 12G for 4K on a single link. Match this to the cameras, not to the display.

Network requirements. SMPTE 2110 needs a managed, PTP-capable network with real bandwidth headroom. Blackmagic's Ethernet Switch 820 and StudioBridge 10G exist because a general-purpose office switch will not do it.

What is SMPTE 2110?

A broadcast standard that carries uncompressed video, audio and metadata as separate streams over IP, with precision timing. It is used inside facilities, not for internet delivery.

Can I use these encoders to stream to YouTube?

No. These are facility IP converters. For internet streaming use a switcher with built-in streaming, or the ATEM Streaming Bridge to a remote decoder.

Do I need a special network switch?

Yes. SMPTE 2110 needs a managed switch with PTP support and enough bandwidth headroom. A standard office switch will drop frames.

What is the difference between an encoder and a decoder?

An encoder converts baseband SDI or HDMI into network packets. A decoder converts them back to SDI or HDMI. Bidirectional units do both in one chassis.

Should I buy these individually?

Usually not. Count cameras, distances and the existing network, then send the details to the Pro Desk — an IP deployment is designed as a system.
