Bring your own
  • your phone (USB-C for the mic receiver)
  • a wall, a mirror or a corner of the room you can keep clear
  • your phone (USB-C for the mic receiver)
  • a wall, a mirror or a corner of the room you can keep clear
  • a USB-C charger for the light's built-in battery
  • your phone (tell us USB-C or Lightning, so the mic receiver matches)
  • a corner or a wall you can dress and keep consistent
  • a power point for the key
  • a 3-pin universal socket or travel plug adapter for the USB-C charger
  • your phone, 64–79 mm wide for the cage (the monitor does not suit Google Pixel or Samsung S22 phones)
  • fast storage, because long 4K takes fill a phone quickly

Build it yourself: what you need

  1. A rig that turns the phone into a camera.

SmallRig phone cages for current iPhone and Android bodies, FilMov filter adapters, SmallRig metal phone holders and the crab-clamp magic arm for table-top shots. A cage buys you a cold shoe for the receiver, a thread for the tripod and a grip that does not put a thumb in the frame.

  2. A clip-on wireless mic — this is the upgrade people hear.

SmallRig S 60 and RØDE Wireless Micro for a near-invisible pair, the Digitek DWM-123 at the value end, Lark Max 2 when the audio is going into a paid edit. Two transmitters if a guest is ever in frame. None of these is a UHF set, so there is nothing to coordinate in India.

  3. A ring or on-camera light in front of you.

Digitek ring lights and the D40W panel, SmallRig RM 25C and Vibe pocket lights, Aputure MC Pro, Godox LR120 and LR180. In front and slightly above: the ring look is right for beauty and GRWM, a small softbox to one side looks more considered.

  4. Stabiliser accessories, not a stabiliser.

SmallRig quick-release plates, counterweights and handgrips. Desk and room Reels are locked-off, so the tripod matters far more than a gimbal; a gimbal is an add-on, not a starting point.

  5. A tripod that holds the height you chose.

SmallRig's aluminium photo tripod and CT-20 for a full-height stand, Digitek's phone tripods at the value end, and the CT25 overhead tripod for flat-lay and hands-on-table shots. Eye level for talking to camera, slightly above for beauty, straight down for products.

  6. A wired lav as the backup and the budget option.

SmallRig Forevala L20; Shure MVL and Hollyland's lavaliers come on a quote. No batteries to forget and no pairing — for a seated piece to camera it is the most reliable sound in the kit.

  7. A second light once the key is right.

SmallRig RC 30B and RC 60B Lite, Simpex P-60W, a SmallRig RM 25C on the wall behind you. Backgrounds are what separate a produced Reel from a bedroom one — put a little colour or a little shape behind you and the same shot reads twice as expensive.

Questions we get asked

Does the receiver fit my phone — USB-C or Lightning?

Check before you order. The RØDE Wireless Micro comes in USB-C and Lightning versions; the SmallRig S 60 and Digitek receivers in these kits are USB-C. An iPhone 15 onwards is USB-C; older iPhones are Lightning; Android is USB-C.

Phone or camera for Reels?

Phone, until the phone is the limitation. A recent phone in good light out-shoots a badly lit camera, records vertical natively and uploads from the same device. Spend on the mic and the light first — that is what the audience notices.

How do I light a mirror or GRWM shot?

One soft source in front of you, above the phone, and nothing behind you pointing at the mirror. A ring light gives the flat even look people expect in GRWM; a small softbox off to one side looks more expensive. Turn the ceiling light off either way.

Do I need a gimbal for desk and room Reels?

No. Talking to camera, unboxing and GRWM are all locked-off shots, so a tripod does more than a gimbal. This setup carries gimbal accessories and quick-release plates; walk-and-talk footage is the phone vlog setup, not this one.

What height should the phone be?

Lens at your eye level for talking to camera, slightly above eye level for beauty and GRWM, and directly overhead for hands and products on a table. Set it once with a tripod that holds the height rather than propping the phone on books.

Can this kit shoot an interview or a piece to camera on location?

Yes — that is the mobile-journalism build: phone in a cage, two wireless transmitters so you and the guest are both clean, a pocket light and a small tripod. It is the same shelf, packed for the field instead of the desk.
