How to choose a capture card

Interface. PCIe cards (DeckLink Mini Recorder 4K, DeckLink Studio 4K, DeckLink 8K Pro G2) live inside a desktop and give the lowest latency and highest bandwidth. Thunderbolt boxes (UltraStudio 4K Extreme 3, UltraStudio Mini Replay 12G) do the same job for a laptop. USB converters — the Atomos Nexus HDMI to USB and Rode HDMI to USB-C — are the cheapest route and present the camera as a webcam.

Signal type. HDMI for short runs from mirrorless cameras. SDI, and specifically 12G-SDI, for 4K over a single long coaxial run.

Capture, playback, or both. Monitor cards (DeckLink Mini Monitor 4K) only output. Capture cards only input. Duplex and quad cards (DeckLink Quad 2) do several streams at once for multi-camera ingest.

Channel count. One card, one camera, unless the card explicitly states multiple independent channels.

Software support. Check that your streaming or editing application supports the card's driver on your operating system before ordering — this is the most common cause of a card that "does not work".

What is the difference between a capture card and a switcher?

A capture card brings one feed into a computer. A switcher combines several feeds into one programme output in hardware, before anything reaches a computer.

Do I need a capture card if my camera has USB webcam mode?

No, for a single camera at webcam resolution. A capture card gives clean HDMI or SDI at full quality, lower latency and no dependence on the camera's own USB implementation.

PCIe or Thunderbolt?

PCIe if you have a desktop — it is cheaper per channel and has more bandwidth. Thunderbolt if you work on a laptop or need to move the device between machines.

Can one card capture two cameras?

Only if it states multiple independent channels. Quad and duplex cards handle several streams; single-channel cards do not, regardless of how many connectors they have.

What does 12G-SDI mean?

A single SDI link carrying 12 Gbit/s, enough for 4K60 over one coaxial cable. 3G-SDI carries HD; 6G and 12G step up for higher resolutions and frame rates.
