Streaming desk setup: capture card, stream deck and key light
Three things turn a webcam desk into a proper stream: a capture device that makes your camera work like a webcam, a physical stream controller for scenes and mute, and one key light on a stand. Start with a dynamic mic on an arm so your keyboard stays out of the audio.

What you need
- A mic that ignores a loud keyboard (a dynamic mic on an arm)
- An HDMI-to-USB capture device, or a video switcher with a built-in webcam output
- A physical stream controller for scenes and levels
- One key light on a stand, with a small softbox
- A PC or Mac, and a camera with a clean HDMI output if you are moving on from a webcam
Streaming means switching scenes and adjusting sound while you are live. Keyboard shortcuts get missed. A webcam under ceiling light looks like exactly that. Three pieces change this: a capture device, a stream controller and a key light. Sound comes first, though, because viewers forgive a soft picture far more easily than a noisy voice.
Audio before video
A condenser mic next to a mechanical keyboard picks up every click. A dynamic mic mostly hears your voice. The Shure MV6 is a USB-C dynamic mic with a cardioid pattern, which means it listens to the front and ignores the back, and it has built-in processing to clean up your voice. It weighs almost 1.3 kg on its round base, but put it on an arm anyway. The SmallRig Microphone Boom Arm Desk Mount holds up to 1.5 kg, and an arm stops desk bumps reaching the mic.
The Shure MV7+ is the step up if you want USB and XLR at the same time, so you can move it to a mixer later without replacing it. The Shure SM7dB is the broadcast-style choice. Its built-in preamp adds 18 or 28 dB, so a basic USB interface can drive it.
Wear closed-back headphones, such as the Shure SRH440A, so game sound does not leak into your mic.
Capture: turn clean HDMI into a webcam
A capture device takes the HDMI video from a camera and hands it to your computer as if it were a webcam. The Atomos Nexus does this with no drivers to install. It accepts up to 4K at 30 frames per second and sends up to 1080p at 60 frames per second over USB. Set the camera to clean HDMI (no on-screen icons), 1080p60 if it can, and pick Nexus as the camera in OBS or Streamlabs.
The Rode HDMI to USB-C Converter does the same job in a small, light stick. The Rode Streamer X combines capture with a mic preamp (up to 76 dB of gain), so one camera and one XLR mic go into a single box. The Blackmagic Intensity Pro 4K is a card that fits inside a desktop PC with a free PCIe slot; it will not work with a laptop.
For any other capture stick, look for HDMI in, 1080p60 over USB, and plug-and-play webcam support (often called UVC).
A stream deck, not a row of hotkeys
A stream controller, often called a stream deck, is a small box of buttons and dials that switch scenes, mute your mic and change levels. The Ulanzi Stream Controller D200 connects over USB and works with Windows and Mac. It has physical keys and dials, and the D200H adds a dock for it.
A simple layout to start with:
- Key 1: talking head
- Key 2: game plus camera
- Key 3: be right back
- A dial for your mic level
- One key that mutes you
If you add a hardware video switcher later, the Blackmagic ATEM Micro Panel (a T-bar and camera buttons for the ATEM Mini range) sits next to the D200 rather than replacing it. One cuts between cameras; the other runs scenes and audio in your streaming software.
One key light, off the desk
Light from your monitor on your face is the default stream look. Replace it with a key light, your main light. The SmallRig RC 30B is a 30 W COB light (a compact, bright LED) with adjustable colour from warm 2700 K to daylight 6500 K. Put it on the SmallRig RA-S280 air-cushioned stand, not on the desk, to one side of the camera at about 45°, just above eye level.
The SmallRig RC 60B is the bigger step: 63 W, with very accurate colour (CRI 97+, so skin tones look natural) and a built-in battery of about 49 Wh. That runs roughly 45 minutes at full power or 75 minutes in eco mode. Add the RA-D30 mini parabolic softbox, which comes with a diffuser and grid, to soften it. With the battery, you do not need another plug point on day one.
Do not clamp a light to your monitor. A stand keeps it out of the lens and away from the keyboard.
When the webcam is no longer the camera
A capture device plus one camera gives you one video source. Two cameras, a game feed and a guest call need a video switcher. The Blackmagic ATEM Mini Pro has four HDMI inputs, one HDMI output, streaming over a network cable, and a USB-C webcam output. The ATEM Mini Pro ISO also records every input separately, plus a project file for editing in DaVinci Resolve.
Keep the D200 for things that live in your streaming software, such as transitions, browser sources and audio the ATEM cannot see. Cut cameras on the ATEM or the Micro Panel.
Keep HDMI cables short on a desk. The Rode HDMI Cable comes in 1.5 m and 3 m lengths, and the SmallRig Ultra-Slim 4K HDMI cable is 1 m. If the camera sits more than about 3 m from the computer, read our HDMI vs SDI guide before you buy a longer cable.
Power and a 60-second checklist
USB-powered capture devices like the Nexus and Streamer X still benefit from a powered USB hub if the laptop is also running a controller and a mic. The RC 60B can run on its battery; the RC 30B needs a wall socket.
Before you go live: the mute key works, scene 1 is up, levels are set, and the light is at 5600 K to match daylight from a window, or 4000 K at night so it does not clash with a warm lamp behind you.
Record 60 seconds and check it. If you hear the keyboard, the arm is too short or the mic is a condenser. If your face looks flat, move the light further away from the camera's line of sight. If the camera shows a frozen or blank picture, the HDMI output is not set to clean, or the device is seeing copy-protected (HDCP) video, which Blackmagic devices will not accept.
