How to choose a ring light or on-camera fill

Ring or pocket panel. A ring surrounds the lens and flattens shadows; a pocket panel sits in a cold shoe and can be angled off-axis to keep some modelling. Aputure's MC and MC Pro are the pocket standard and come in multi-light kits for a full small setup.

Output and distance. Small fixtures fall off fast. A pocket light is fill at a metre; it is not a key at three. Ulanzi's 100 W COB with condenser lens and the PL25 sit at the higher-output end of this shelf.

Battery runtime. Built-in batteries are stated in mAh and runtime at full power. A light that runs 50 minutes at 100 % is a 50-minute light.

Colour control. Bi-colour is enough for faces. RGB (Ulanzi C60 RGB, Aputure MC Pro) earns its place lighting the background or a product.

Questions we get asked

Is a ring light good for video interviews?

For flat, even tutorial and beauty lighting, yes. For a shaped, cinematic look it is the wrong tool — a key light off-axis with a softbox gives contour that a ring cannot.

Why do my glasses reflect the ring light?

Because the light is directly on the lens axis. Raise the ring slightly and tilt the subject's glasses down, or move to an off-axis key with a softbox.

How long do pocket LED lights run on battery?

Typically 40 to 90 minutes at full output, longer at reduced power. Check the stated mAh and the runtime figure at 100 %, not the figure at 25 %.

Can a pocket light be my key light?

Only at close range for a tight shot. Small fixtures fall off quickly, so at normal interview distance they work as fill, accent or background, not key.

What mount do on-camera lights use?

A cold shoe with a 1/4\"-20 thread underneath. That lets them sit on a camera, a magic arm, a light stand adapter or a phone cage.
