Build it yourself: what you need

  1. A microphone matched to the room.

A large-diaphragm condenser (RØDE NT1 Signature or NT1 5th Generation) if the room is quiet; a dynamic if it is not. Check the interface's gain and 48 V before anything else: a condenser on an interface with too little gain is the usual mistake.

  2. A one-channel interface with 48 V.

The RØDE AI-1 is bus-powered, with one combo input. That is all one voice needs. Two inputs wait for a second person.

  3. Closed-back headphones.

Sony MDR-7506 for tracking — the seal matters more than the curve at 20 cm. Open-backs leak into the capsule.

  4. A boom arm.

A desk stand prints keyboard knocks. SmallRig 4303 keeps a condenser off the table reflection.

  5. Acoustic treatment first.

Two 2 × 4 ft absorbers at first reflections will change this chain more than swapping the mic. Studio monitors come later, once the room is treated.

Questions we get asked

Condenser or dynamic for a home studio?

A large-diaphragm condenser if the room is quiet and you can treat first reflections. A dynamic if the room is untreated and you work close. The RØDE NT1 Signature, with its shock mount and XLR cable in the box, is the condenser in the Starter kit.

Do you sell acoustic panels?

Only a few desk-scale panels so far. For a room, broadband absorbers at the first-reflection points will improve this chain more than any microphone upgrade.

What interface do I need for one voice?

One XLR input with 48 V, enough clean gain, and USB-C out. The RØDE AI-1 is that device, with 60 dB of gain, and it is the interface in the Starter kit.

Do I need studio monitors?

Closed-back headphones for tracking. Monitors for mixing, later, and only after the room is treated. Studio monitors are in the store when you get there.
