Build it yourself: what you need

  1. A webcam at the top of the screen, not at the bottom.

Elgato Facecam Neo for a first desk, OBSBOT Meet 2 with auto framing, OBSBOT Tiny 3 when it should follow you. A laptop camera looks up your nose because the laptop is below your eyeline; the fix costs nothing extra if the webcam sits on the monitor and the laptop is closed or on a riser.

    See all Webcams
  2. A key light you can leave on a preset.

Digitek's foldable desk light or 19-inch panel, an amaran Pano 120c for more output, Godox MA5R for a small fill. One light, in front, slightly above, diffused. If there is a window behind you, close the curtain before you buy anything else.

See all On-camera and ring lights
  3. A USB microphone close to your mouth.

Mirfak TU1 or Godox EM68 on the desk, RØDE PodMic USB on an arm. At 20 cm the room disappears; at arm's length the fan, the keyboard and the corridor come with you. The PodMic USB has a headphone jack on the mic, which is what you want when you are also monitoring a webinar feed.

  4. A second light on the background, once the face is fixed.

SmallRig RC 30B or RC 60B Lite into a small softbox, SmallRig's RM01 mini lights, Godox pocket panels. A plain wall behind you at the same brightness as your face is why office calls look flat — put a little light on the wall or a lamp in the frame and the picture gains depth without a green screen.

    See all LED lights
  5. An arm so the microphone is not on the desk.

Elgato Wave Mic Arm LP stays below the webcam's frame line; SmallRig's desk arm and the RØDE PSA1 are the heavier arms; RØDE's DS2 sits on a heavy base if the table cannot be gripped. A desk-mounted mic hears every notebook you open.

See all Boom arms and stands
  6. Headphones, so nobody hears themselves back.

Sony MDR-7506, RØDE NTH-50 and NTH-100. Closed and wired: Bluetooth adds delay and, on most laptops, silently drops the microphone to call quality the moment you connect it.

    See all Headphones and IEMs
  7. A stand or tripod to fix the height.

SmallRig CT-20 for a camera on a desk corner, a Digitek or SmallRig desk tripod for a phone used as a second angle, SmallRig's desk mounts for a webcam that must sit higher than the screen. Get the lens to your eye level once and never think about it again.

Price and lead time

Every kit on this page shows a final price: sourced to order and dispatched in 14 to 21 working days. Any item on a quote gets its price and lead time on the quote. Speakerphones, room audio DSP and conference-room systems are not part of these kits — for a meeting room with a table and a screen, send the Pro Desk the room size and headcount and it comes back with a bill of materials.

Questions we get asked

What makes the biggest difference on a call — camera, light or mic?

Light, then microphone, then camera. A laptop camera in good light looks better than a 4K webcam lit by a ceiling tube, and people forgive a soft picture long before they forgive having to strain to hear you.

Where does the light go?

In front of you, slightly above eye level, off to one side of the screen. Not behind you — a window at your back turns you into a silhouette — and not on the ceiling, which puts shadows under your eyes.

Do I need a microphone if my laptop and earphones already have one?

For internal calls, no. For webinars, client pitches and anything recorded, yes: a RØDE PodMic USB or an Elgato Wave:3 sits 20 cm from your mouth and stops picking up the fan, the keyboard and the room.

Can I use my DSLR or mirrorless as the webcam?

If it has clean HDMI out, yes — through an Elgato Cam Link 4K, on mains power, not on its own battery. For most people a 4K webcam such as the OBSBOT Meet 2 is the same result with none of the setup ritual.

What about a meeting room rather than a desk?

A room needs a camera that can pan and zoom and a microphone that is not on anybody's collar — a PTZ on the wall opposite the table, which we confirm on a quote. Speakerphones and room DSP are not part of these kits; the Pro Desk quotes those with an install partner.

Will the light and webcam work with my laptop power setup?

Plan a socket near the desk for the light. The webcam and the USB microphone share the laptop bus — on a two-port machine, plan a powered hub.
