How to choose an SD card or SSD

Sustained write speed, not peak. Cameras need a guaranteed minimum. For SD that is the V-rating (V30, V60, V90); for CFexpress it is the sustained figure on the datasheet. The headline "up to" number is a burst rate and tells you nothing about 4K recording.

Card format by camera. CFexpress Type A and Type B are physically different and not interchangeable. Check the camera's approved media list before ordering.

Reader interface. A UHS-II SD card in a UHS-I reader offloads at a third of the speed. SmallRig's SD3.0 and multi-format readers and Atomos's CFexpress Card Reader exist for exactly this.

External SSD recording. Monitor-recorders and many mirrorless bodies record straight to an SSD. Ulanzi's DT580 NVMe and MA55 magnetic enclosures and SmallRig's SD-01 M.2 enclosure turn a bare drive into a recording target.

Questions we get asked

What does the V rating on an SD card mean?

V30, V60 and V90 state the guaranteed minimum sustained write speed in MB/s — 30, 60 and 90. That is the number a camera needs, not the 'up to' read speed on the front of the card.

Is CFexpress Type A the same as Type B?

No. They are different physical sizes and speeds and are not interchangeable. Check which type your camera takes before ordering.

Why is my card offloading slowly?

Usually the reader. A UHS-II card in a UHS-I reader runs at UHS-I speed, and a fast card on a USB 2.0 port is limited by the port.

Can I record straight to an SSD instead of a card?

Many monitor-recorders and some mirrorless bodies do. Use a drive the manufacturer has qualified and an enclosure rated for the interface speed you need.

Do I need shared storage?

Only when more than one editor works on the same footage. A single editor is better served by fast local drives and a backup copy.
