Build it yourself: what you need

  1. A Stream Deck so you stop alt-tabbing.

Scene changes, mute, clips and chat commands all live on physical keys, which is the only way to run a stream while your hands are on WASD. Stream Deck Neo for a first channel, the standard Stream Deck for most desks, Stream Deck + when you want dials for mic and game volume, Stream Deck XL once fifteen keys are not enough. Stream Deck Studio is the rack version for a room that streams every day.

  2. A capture card the moment a console is in the picture.

UGREEN CM700 for console capture with a 4K60 loop-out to your monitor, Elgato 4K X when you want capture and passthrough up to 4K144. Cam Link 4K is the different job — it turns a camera's HDMI into a webcam. Two-PC builds put the card in the streaming machine and leave the gaming PC doing nothing but the game.

  3. A microphone on a stand, not on the desk.

Godox EM68, RØDE XCM-50 and XDM-100, Elgato Wave:3: all USB, all good enough that the channel sounds like a channel. Shure SM7B is the upgrade, and it wants a Wave XLR behind it. Whatever you buy, the desk transmits every keystroke, so it goes on an arm.

  4. A webcam that is actually 1080p60.

Elgato Facecam Neo for a first channel, OBSBOT Meet 2 with auto framing, OBSBOT Tiny 3 when you want 4K and tracking. Fix the exposure manually — auto-exposure hunting on a dark game scene is what makes a face flicker between pale and orange.

  5. A key light, because a ceiling tube is not lighting.

A 19-inch Digitek panel on a SmallRig desk clamp does the job at the desk edge, and an amaran Pano 120c with its softbox does it with more output. Point it at your face at about 45 degrees and turn the room light down; a single soft key beats an RGB wall every time.

  6. Closed-back headphones you can wear for four hours.

Sony MDR-7506, RØDE NTH-50 and NTH-100. Closed so the game does not bleed into the mic, and wired so there is no Bluetooth delay between what you hear and what the chat sees.

  7. A boom arm that clears the keyboard.

Elgato Wave Mic Arm LP for a low-profile arm that stays out of the camera frame and carries up to 2 kg, enough for an SM7B. SmallRig's desk arm costs less and sits higher. Check the desk lip thickness before you buy the clamp.

Questions we get asked

Do I need a second PC to stream?

No. One reasonably current PC encodes 1080p60 in OBS while it plays. A second PC only earns its place when the game is pinning the GPU, and then you need a capture card in the streaming machine, such as the Elgato 4K Pro or 4K X.

Do I need a capture card if I stream only from one PC?

Not for PC games; OBS captures the game window directly. You need a card the moment a console is in the chain — PS5, Xbox or Switch output HDMI and nothing else, so a UGREEN CM700 or an Elgato 4K X sits between console and monitor.

USB microphone or XLR?

Start USB: Godox EM68, RØDE XCM-50 or XDM-100, Elgato Wave:3. Move to XLR when you want an SM7B. That mic needs real gain, so pair it with a Wave XLR rather than a cheap interface.

Webcam or a mirrorless camera?

At desk distance an OBSBOT Meet 2 or Tiny 3 is already better than most badly lit mirrorless shots. A camera only wins if it has clean HDMI out, a dummy battery so it does not sleep, and a Cam Link 4K to get it into OBS.

How much upload speed does a stream need?

Plan on a steady 6 to 8 Mbps upload for 1080p60 and headroom above that. A wired fibre line in an Indian city handles it; a 4G or 5G hotspot will look fine for ten minutes and then drop frames in a fight.

Is the software an extra cost?

No. OBS is free and the Stream Deck software is included with the hardware. What you are buying here is the key, the dial and the mic, not a subscription.
