Build it yourself: what you need

  1. A camera you can leave running.

Canon's R50 and R50 V take USB power and a real microphone input, and record 4K, so they run for a whole afternoon on a tripod. The R50 V has the wider lens, which matters in a small room. The R8 goes full-frame for cleaner skin in dim rooms. On the Budget kit your phone is the camera.

  2. Soft light, above eye level.

The biggest visual change you can make. One light through a softbox looks better than two bare panels. Every kit here uses a Bowens mount, so softboxes swap between lights as you grow: Digitek's 150 W COB on Budget, Godox SL60II on Starter, amaran 100x S and 200x S above that.

  3. A wireless clip-on mic for video.

A mic near your mouth beats a good mic across the room. RØDE Wireless ME goes straight into the camera, so sound and picture stay in one file with no syncing.

  4. A dynamic desk mic for voice.

RØDE's PodMic USB hears your voice more than your room, which is what an untreated room needs. It sits on a PSA1 arm with Sony MDR-7506 closed headphones and plugs into a laptop by USB-C. The Pro kit runs two XLR PodMics through a RODECaster Duo.

  5. A real tripod.

SmallRig's AD-50Lite has a fluid head, so nothing jerks when you pan, and it carries a teleprompter as well as the camera.

  6. A teleprompter, once you script.

Digitek's 10 inch prompter uses your phone as the screen and keeps your eyes on the lens.

  7. A background that is not your bedroom.

A plain wall or curtain is fine to start. Digitek's folding stand and 9 ft white paper come in on the Pro kit and as add-ons below it.

Questions we get asked

What do I need first for a home studio?

Light and sound before a camera. A recent phone already shoots clean video in good light, so one soft light above eye level and a mic close to your mouth change the result more than a new camera does. That is what the Budget kit is.

How much room does a home studio need?

A corner about 2.5 by 3 metres is enough for one person talking to camera: you sit a metre from the wall, the camera sits about 1.5 metres from you, and the light goes to one side. Our studio planner takes your room size and furniture and draws the layout with the gear that fits.

Can one home studio do video, podcast and voice-over?

Yes. That is what separates this setup from a single-job one. The Better kit has a camera with a wireless clip-on mic for video, plus a dynamic desk mic on an arm with closed headphones for voice work, in the same room.

My room echoes. Do I need acoustic panels?

Not on day one. Work close to a dynamic mic, or clip a mic near your mouth, and add soft furnishing: a rug, curtains, a bookshelf. Panels help most if you plan to record music or long voice-overs. Message us and we will quote a set for your room.

Home studio or home recording studio: which one is for me?

This setup is for people who appear on camera or speak: YouTube, podcasts, classes, voice-overs. If you record music or sing into a DAW and need no camera, go to the home recording studio setup.

Is the price final, and when does it ship?

Each kit page shows a final price with GST, the sum of its items. You can swap, remove or add items and the total updates. Everything is sourced to order and dispatched in 14 to 21 working days of payment. Flat shipping is added at checkout.
