Why this kit
Four people need four real preamps and four separate headphone levels; a laptop interface with two outputs cannot do it, which is why the recorder-console is the anchor of this build rather than an accessory. The SM7B is specified here because at four open mics the deciding factor is off-axis rejection, and its cardioid pattern plus internal shock mounting is what keeps the other three voices out of each channel. It is a low-output mic; the PodTrak P8's preamps offer up to 70 dB of gain, enough to drive it without an inline booster. The P8 records every channel to its SD card, so a computer crash does not end the episode, and the two spare inputs take a remote guest or a phone call.
