How to choose a lens adapter

Flange distance decides whether it is possible. Adapting a shorter flange distance onto a longer one needs corrective optics and loses quality. Short-flange mirrorless bodies adapt almost anything; the reverse mostly does not work. Check the two flange figures before ordering.

Camera mounts. Blackmagic supplies factory mounts for the URSA Mini Pro in PL, EF and B4 — these are mount swaps on the body, not adapters between them.

Filter and matte box rings. SmallRig's Adapter Rings Kit (52/55/58/62–95 mm), 95–114 mm threaded ring and clamp-on ring (114 mm to 80/85/95/110 mm) adapt a lens barrel to a matte box or filter. These do not change the lens mount.

Support the adapter. A heavy adapted lens loads the camera mount, not the adapter. SmallRig's lens adapter support for the Nikon FTZ and BMPCC 4K brackets transfer that weight to the rig.

Electronics. A passive mechanical adapter carries no signal: no autofocus, no aperture control, no EXIF. Budget for manual operation unless the adapter explicitly states electronic contacts.

Can I adapt any lens to any camera?

No. It depends on flange distance. A mount with a shorter flange distance can generally take lenses from a longer one; going the other way needs corrective optics and costs image quality.

Will autofocus work through a lens adapter?

Only through an adapter with electronic contacts designed for that pairing. Passive mechanical adapters give manual focus and manual aperture only.

Do I need a lens support with an adapter?

For heavy or long lenses, yes. The camera's mount is carrying the full moment arm otherwise, and a support bracket transfers that load to the rod system or cage.

What is the difference between a lens adapter and an adapter ring?

A lens adapter changes the lens mount. An adapter ring changes a filter thread diameter so a filter or matte box fits the lens barrel.

Is a mount swap the same as an adapter?

No. Blackmagic's PL, EF and B4 mounts for the URSA Mini Pro replace the camera's mount assembly, which keeps flange distance correct rather than adding a spacer.
