How to choose an HDMI cable and the rest

Get the connector right at both ends. Micro, mini and full-size HDMI are three different plugs, and most mirrorless cameras use micro. Atomos's locking cables come specified by both ends for this reason.

Rating, not thickness. A 4K60 HDR cable states that on the label. For long SDI runs, the coaxial rating decides how far 12G will actually travel.

Locking where it matters. A camera-mounted cable that can be pulled out mid-take should lock. Locking HDMI and screw-down power connectors exist because gaffer tape is not a strategy.

Power cables are not generic. D-Tap to dummy battery cables are camera-specific — SmallRig makes separate parts for Sony NP-FZ100, Canon LP-E6NH and dual-sided NP-F. Aputure's head cables (5-pin weatherproof, 8-pin, 10-pin) are fixture-specific and come in stated lengths.

Length discipline. Shorter is better for signal and for the floor. Buy the length you need plus one margin step, not a 5 m cable for a 1 m run.

SmallRig, Aputure, Hollyland, Rode, Shure and Atomos make most of what is here.

Questions we get asked

Which HDMI connector does my camera use?

Most mirrorless bodies use micro HDMI; some use mini, and full-size appears mainly on cinema and broadcast bodies. Check the port before ordering, and consider a locking cable.

Does an expensive HDMI cable improve picture quality?

No. Digital signal either arrives or it does not. What matters is the stated rating for your resolution and frame rate, the length, and whether the connector locks.

Are D-Tap power cables interchangeable between cameras?

No. The dummy battery end is specific to the camera's battery type — Sony NP-FZ100, Canon LP-E6NH and NP-F are all different parts.

How long can an SDI cable run?

It depends on the rate and the cable. 3G-SDI runs much further than 12G-SDI on the same coaxial cable, so check the cable's rating at your signal rate.

Should I buy locking cables?

For anything mounted on a moving camera, yes. A locking HDMI or power connector prevents the single most common on-set signal loss.
