How to choose a cinema camera

Sensor size and mount. Super 35 and full-frame behave differently at the same focal length, and the mount decides which glass you can put in front. Blackmagic's URSA Mini Pro takes interchangeable PL, EF and B4 mounts; Sony's FX3, FX30 and FX6 are E-mount.

Dynamic range and codec. This is the specification that survives the grade. Blackmagic RAW and ProRes give a colourist room; a long-GOP consumer codec does not.

Media. CFexpress, SSD or SxS — each has a cost per hour and a workflow. Check the recording media before you budget the body.

Rigging. None of these ship ready to shoot. SmallRig supplies Sony FX9, FX6 and FX3/FX30 kits, and the URSA and Pocket bodies need cages, handles and power.

Blackmagic's range runs from the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K to the URSA Cine 17K 65. Where a body says Request price, we confirm price and lead time on your quote.

Questions we get asked

What makes a cinema camera different from a mirrorless camera?

Recording format and body design. Cinema cameras record raw or high-bitrate intra-frame codecs, carry XLR audio and timecode, and are built to be rigged rather than handheld bare.

Which lens mount should I choose?

Choose the mount your existing glass uses, or E-mount if you have none — it accepts the widest range of adapters. PL is the rental-house standard for cine primes.

Do I need special media for a cinema camera?

Usually yes. Raw and high-bitrate recording needs CFexpress, a certified SSD or SxS media. Check the camera's approved media list before buying cards.

Why do some cinema cameras say Request price?

Some bodies do not have a confirmed India price yet. Send the model and your city and we confirm the variant, price and lead time on your quote.

Does a cinema camera come ready to shoot?

No. Budget for a cage, a top handle, a monitor, media, batteries and a power plate. The body price is rarely more than two-thirds of a working configuration.
