How to choose a stream deck

Key count and dials. Count the actions you repeat. Keys handle discrete actions; dials handle continuous ones such as gain, exposure or a colour wheel. Ulanzi's D200 and D200H Stream Controllers cover the creator end.

What software it drives. A controller is only as good as its integration. Blackmagic's DaVinci Resolve Editor Keyboard, Micro Color Panel and ATEM Micro Panel are built for specific applications and are far faster inside them than a generic macro pad.

Where it sits in the chain. The ATEM Micro Panel controls a switcher, not a computer. Fairlight Live Audio Panels 10, 20 and 40 control audio in Resolve. Decide which layer you actually need to touch during the show.

Desk space. These live permanently in front of you. Check footprint before you clear a space for it.

Elgato Stream Deck models, Blackmagic editing and switcher panels and Ulanzi decks make up the range.

Questions we get asked

What does a stream deck actually do?

It maps repeated actions to physical keys — scene changes, mutes, clip playback, application shortcuts — so you press one button instead of navigating a menu mid-stream.

Is a stream deck the same as a control panel?

Not quite. A stream deck drives software on a computer. A control panel such as the ATEM Micro Panel drives a hardware switcher directly, independently of the computer.

Do I need dials as well as keys?

Dials help with continuous values — audio gain, exposure, colour. If your repeated actions are all on/off, keys alone are enough.

Which stream deck should I start with?

A 15-key deck suits most desks. Choose one with dials when you want to ride mic and game volume by hand, and a 32-key deck once fifteen keys are not enough.

Will a control panel work with my editing software?

Only the applications the manufacturer supports. Blackmagic panels are built for DaVinci Resolve and ATEM switchers; check the supported software list before ordering.
